GLOBAL DAY OF ACTIONS PLANNED TO STOP STAR WARS MISSILE DEFENSE JUST THE START AS BMDO MOVES TO TEST SPACE-BASED LASER FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Bruce Gagnon (352) 337-9274 An International Day of Protest to Stop the Militarization of Space will be held on October 7. Protest events will be held all over the world as opposition mounts to halt the new push for Star Wars. The Global Network Against Weapons & Nuclear Power in Space has called for protests against the weapons in space program of the Pentagon's Ballistic Missile Defense Organization (BMDO). Groups around the world are joining to help sponsor events. Actions planned so far include rallies and demonstrations in: * Asheville, N.C. * Baku, Azerbaijan * Bathe Iron Works, ME. * Beale Air Force Base, CA. * Bucharest, Romania (U.S. Embassy) * Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL. * Chicago, IL. * Colorado Springs, CO. (U.S. Space Command HQ) * Edwards Air Force Base, CA. * Flic en Flac, Mauritius * France * Fylingdales, England (U.S. Spy Base) * Great Neck, N.Y. * Hartford, CT. * Holland, MI. * Kathmandu, Nepal (U.S. Embassy) * Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M. * Leicester, England * London, England (U.S. Embassy) * Los Angeles Air Force Base, CA. * Madison, WI. * Menwith Hill, England (U.S. Spy Base) * Nevada Test Site * Northampton, MA. * New York, N.Y. * Pathanamthitta, India * Penn State University * Schwaebisch Gmuend, Germany * Seoul, Korea * Stockton, CA. * St. Paul, MN. (Lockheed Martin) * Toronto, Canada (U.S. Consulate) * Tucson, AZ. (Raytheon) * Valley Forge, PA. (Lockheed Martin) * Vandenberg Air Force Base, CA. * Vancouver, Canada * White House, Washington DC The Ballistic Missile Defense Organization is now promoting National Missile Defense (NMD) and Theater Missile Defense (TMD) which would create a new escalation of the nuclear arms race. President Clinton is expected to give at least a partial go-ahead to plans for BMD in coming weeks. The BMDO will also be deciding in coming weeks on the site for testing of the space-based laser (SBL) program which the military calls the "follow-on" technology to BMD. The SBL testing program would cost over $30 billion and tests will be conducted at either Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, FL., Redstone Army Space Center at Huntsville, AL., or at the Stennis Missile Test Center in Mississippi. The SBL program, the same idea as the Reagan-era Star Wars plan, would consist of a constellation of 20-30 orbiting lasers that would zap targets in space and on Earth. According to Global Network Coordinator Bruce Gagnon, "The picture is becoming clearer all the time. BMD is the Trojan horse - the foot in the door - the way to sell Star Wars as a defensive system. Then once BMD is deployed the SBL program would be put into motion. In the end, hundreds of billions of tax dollars will be wasted in order to give the U.S. Space Command 'control and domination' of the heavens. Now is the time for the world to act in order to keep space for peace." October 7 protest sites are being added every day.
