The result could be the first deployment of regular Russian troops in the heart of Central Asia since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Units from a force of several hundred Islamic rebel fighters based in the mountains of Tajikistan have attacked neighbouring Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan nearly every day for the past three weeks. Reportedly financed by the terrorist leader Osama bin Laden, the rebels have vowed to set up an independent Islamic state and to topple the Uzbek Government in Tashkent. Moscow said yesterday that it was ready to help.
