                   President attends UN Millennium Summit

 President Tran Duc Luong arrived in New York, the United States of
 America on September 5 for the United Nations Millennium Summit at the
 invitation of United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan. 

 As many as 152 heads of states and governments from around the world
 gathered at the opening ceremony of the first UN General Assembly of the
 new millennium in New York on September 6.

 The summit is co-chaired by United Nations secretary general, Mr Kofi
 Annan, the president of Namibia, Mr Sam Nujoma and the president of
 Finland, Ms Tarja Halonen.

 "The problems seem huge," said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, listing
 poverty, AIDS, wars and environmental degradation. 'But in today's world,
 given the technology and the resources around, we have the means to
 tackle them. If we have the will, we can deal with them.''

 At the summit's conclusion, world leaders are expected to adopt the
 so-called Millennium Declaration, which commits to eradicating poverty,
 promoting education and reversing the spread of HIV/AIDS.
