Further co-operation among ASEAN countries,
says Mr Manh

Co-operation and dialogue among members should be increased to facilitate regional and
international integration, with priority given to economic and financial co-operation,
said Vietnamese National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh on September 11.

He was addressing the 21st ASEAN Inter-parliamentary Organisation (AIPO) General
Assembly being held in Singapore with the participation of AIPO members including
Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore and the
two special observers of Brunei and Myanmar.

The AIPO meeting is being attended by Australia, Canada, Japan, the Republic of Korea,
new Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Russia and European Parliament as observers.

NA chairman Manh briefed the meeting about the socio-economic situation in Vietnam and
the activities of the country's parliament in the past years. He said the Vietnamese
national Assembly will continue helping the government to actively participate in
ASEAN co-operation programmes and fulfil its function as the president of the ASEAN
Standing Committee and the ASEAN Regional Forum.

The National Assembly of Vietnam would act with its regional counterparts to make AIPO
stronger towards strengthening the solidarity of ASEAN-10 and taking firm steps into
the 21st century, Mr Manh said.
