Striving for the Great Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation

Our Daily published an editorial October 1 entitled "Striving for the Great
Rejuvenation of the Chinese Nation" on October 1 to mark the 51st National
Day of the People's Republic of China.

The year 2000, the end of the millennium, is the last year of the China's
ninth five-year plan (1996-2000), a milestone in the development of the
country's socialist modernization and the history of the Chinese nation,
the editorial says.

In the five years, China has achieved sustained rapid and healthy
development of the national economy, resulting in further enhancement of
its overall national strength, a "soft-landing" of its economy, and as
success in curbing deflation, according to the editorial.

In general, it says, the Chinese people have become well-off, with poor
people in the countryside having basically resolved the problem of food and
clothing.

The editorial says the past five years shows China's progress in
implementing its strategy of development in science, technology and
education; in further opening up to the rest of the world in an all-around
way; in achieving cultural and ethic progress and building up democracy and
rule of law; and in making historic gains on the issue of the peaceful
reunification of the motherland.

The editorial says that the coming five to 10 years are an important period
for China's economic and social development. It urges the people to keep
cool-headed and further strengthen the country's economic and defense
powers and the cohesiveness of the Chinese nation, so as to win a complete
victory in building the socialist modernization.

It reiterates that the overwhelming task for China is to center on economic
development and further emancipate and develop social productivity, in a
bid to strengthen the country's overall national strength.

"The leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC) is the force at the
core to the victory of our undertakings, while the broad masses of Party
members are the pillar of the reform, open-up and modernization drive," the
editorial stresses.

It quotes CPC General Secretary Jiang Zemin as saying at a ceremony to
welcome the new millennium in Beijing at that the Chinese nation must
realize its great rejuvenation.
