INVITATION TO THE COURT HEARING OF NURI ERYUKSEL
October 9, 2000, Hamburg
FREEDOM FOR NURI ERYUKSEL!
Nuri Eryuksel is a revolutionary from Turkey who
dedicated his life to the struggle against fascism and
imperialism. As a result of a demand from Germany, he
was arrested in Switzerland on October 15, 1999, and
after a time he was extradited to Germany. Nuri
Eryuksel has now been in prison for a year and has
been held in solitary confinement. For a human being
who is 94% blind in both eyes, this means that the
effects of solitary confinement are doubled.
Because of his eye condition, Nuri Eryuksel is in need
of someone to look after him on a continual basis. All
the applications by his legal representatives to
transfer him to a hospital clinic have been refused by
the court. Nuri Eryuksel has stayed in a cell on his
own for a year. He has no contact with the other
prisoners, and is not allowed to read or obtain
information. It is not acceptable for a political;
prisoner to be denied reading material and means of
obtaining information. In this way the German state is
also preventing him from preparing his defence.
Nuri Eryuksel was sentenced by the September 12, 1980
junta in Turkey to 15 years. Because of the torture in
the junta's prisons, where he stayed for 10 years, his
lost the sight in the hitherto healthy eye as a
consequence of torture. After he was released, Nuri
Eryuksel continued his revolutionary activities within
the democratic and cultural areas and during this time
he was detained and tortured on numerous occasions.
Because of the deterioration of his eyesight, and the
hindering of his political activities in Turkey, he
went into exile. Since 1993, he has lived in Germany
as a political asylum seeker.
His asylum application was granted and Nuri Eryuksel
did not give any guarantees to the German state that
he would refrain from political activities. As an
honourable person who dedicated his life to
revolution, he took the people'sstruggle against
fascism as his own and did not hesitate to continue
his political activities in the democratic sphere in
Germany.
The German state, which violated the rights and
liberties of the people on every occasion, and for the
sake of its own interests has supported the fascism in
Turkey which has declared war upon its own people, has
also attacked revolutionaries from Turkey and banned
their organisations.
Nuri Eryuksel was arrested because of his
revolutionary beliefs and the court is trying him on
charges carrying a very heavy penalty.
Let's defend Nuri Eryuksel, who is on trial because of
his revolutionary beliefs. We invite everyone to the
hearing to condemn the kind of mentality which aims to
ban beliefs.
