Mekong delta's death toll reaches 391 The death toll in the Mekong delta has reached 391 as of October 20, 17 more than the previous day, according to the latest information from the Central Steering Committee on Flood and Storm Control. About 826,000 houses have been submerged in water; some 240,000 families are in urgent need of relief aid and more than 2,600 schools were submerged and seriously damaged. Total damage was estimated at VND 3,528 billion. Flood victims in the Mekong delta have received a total of more than VND 149 billion as relief aid from the government, social organisations and people nationwide. In Dac Lac province, 13 out of 18 districts and city were flooded due to heavy rains, causing great losses in lives and property. Fourteen people were killed, six others injured and 200,000 people had to evacuate from the flooded areas; 615 houses were collapsed or swept away; 5,863 others waterlogged; more than 4,000 hectares of rice, coffee and other vegetables and crops inundated for a long period of time; about 1,208 tonnes of rice was swept away. Total losses were estimated at VND 90 billion.
