ASEM III for Asia-Europe co-operation: deputy PM
The third Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM III) would set a basis for a new
stage of development in the co-operation between the two continents for
their prosperity as well as the well-being of the whole world.
So said Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Manh Cam at a discussion
on Asia-Europe co-operation in political, economic and other fields
within the third ASEM in Seoul, the Republic of Korea, on October 20.
He stressed that the third ASEM was of significance as it would define
orientations, principles and priorities for co-operation between the two
continents in the early 21st century.
Deputy PM Cam expressed his delight at encouraging results of ASEM's
co-operative activities in the past four years. He said the tendency of
peace, stability and co-operation would remain strong for development
despite the fact that conflicts still occur in several areas of the two
continents.
To cope with that situation, ASEM member countries should co-operate in
resolving such conflicts and preventing complicated disorders to
consolidate peace as a prerequisite for development, he added.
ASEM countries should take advantage of the United Nations' assistance to
bring into play our countries' roles in maintaining peace and stability.
First of all, the UN needs to accelerate the disarmament process,
particularly the disarmament of nuclear and mass destructive weapons.
This process is closely connected with nuclear non-proliferation and the
establishment of nuclear free zones. In this spirit, the south-east Asian
countries had signed a treaty on the establishment of a nuclear free
south-east Asia.
Vietnam, in the capacity as president of the Association of Southeast
Asian Nations (ASEAN) Standing Committee and the ASEAN Regional Forum
(ARF), hopes that nuclear countries will soon participate in the protocol
on this issue.
We should also take advantage of the UN's concern and help to solve our
countries' pressing issues including hunger eradication and poverty
reduction, Mr Cam stressed. (VNA)
