Tripoli

Comorian President Col. Ansoumani Azali late Wednesday held his first round
of discussions in Tripoli with the Libyan leader, Col. Moammar Kadhafi.

Azali paid tribute to Kadhafi for his efforts to restore peace in various
trouble spots in Africa, including the Comoros, where Anjouan island has
seceded from the two others in the Indian Ocean archipelago.

He said his island nation could learn lessons from the Libyan experience of
running a government by the people, adding that the Comorian islands had
also "decided to do away with centralisation."

All the islands of the archipelago are already managing their own affairs,
and are moving towards the realisation and consolidation of the power of
the Comorian people, he said.

Azali also reiterated his country's support for the African Union, saying
it was a step towards the construction of unity and progress of the African
continent.

Speaking shortly after his arrival, the Comorian president, accompanied by
his wife, had commended the existing close ties between his country and
Libya.

"We have come to seek advice from the wise and perceptive leader of the
Libyan revolution, on the one hand, and, on the other, to discuss about the
African Union, initiated from Libyan soil, to realise the unity of the
continent and serve its peoples," he said.

The Comorian military regime, which seized power in a coup d'etat, has been
ostracised by the OAU, which has imposed sanctions on Moroni.

The junta leaders are still not allowed to participate in the continental
body's meeting, including the July 2000 OAU summit in Lome, Togo.
