'Deathly' silence in the government
=======================
Ninety-nine inmates and detainees, 24 of whom are women, continue their
death fast in 17 different prisons. As the death fast in protest of F-type
(isolation cell) prisons ends its 40th day, those in power have had not a
word to say. The hunger strike being supported by 15 artists in a show of
solidarity with the death fast also has now entered its 9th day.

NEWS CENTER

The government has not broken its deathly silence on prisons, which continue
to be Turkey's bleeding wound, even as the death fast enters its 41st day.
Inmates and detainees imprisoned on Revolutionary People's Liberation
Party-Front (DHKP-C), Turkish Communist Workers' Party (TKIP), and Turkish
Communist Party/Marxist Leninist [TKP(ML)] charges in 17 different prisons
say they are determined to continue with their fast.

Prisoners and detainees, their families, and human rights defenders all
refer to the F-type prisons - which officials assert are up to European
standards - as "coffins." And protests against the F-type prisons continues,
just as government construction of them continues. The hunger strike in
which a total of 816 prisoners were participating turned into a death fast
as of November 18. At present, 99 inmates and detainees, 24 of whom are
women, continue the death fast.

Meanwhile, the families members of prisoners who began a hunger strike to
support the activists in prisons have ended the eighth day of their strike.
Hunger strikers were hosted in the home of singer Bilgesu Erenus and then
Mahmut Gokgoz. The 15 hunger strikers finished the eighth day of their
protest in the home of singer Haydar Bayer.

What do medical experts say?

Medical circles call attention to the fact that those who begin death fasts
lose 80 percent of their life functions after 20 days, whereas as of the
30th day, vegetable existence can set in and vital organs can lose most of
their functions. Medical experts say that serious illness sets in after the
40th day of a fast. Some of the symptoms that are currently being seen in
the prisoners on the death fast are loss of hearing, vision disturbances,
double vision, even blindness, nausea and vomiting, jaundice, bleeding of
the gums, stomach bleeding, and bed sores.

Prisoners say their demands are as follows:

"Close down the F-type cell prisons. Abolish the No. 3713 Anti-Terrorism Law
and all of its consequences. Abolish the Three-Way Protocol (which curtails
lawyer-client rights). Close down the State Security Courts (DGMs). Let
those who are responsible for the serious wounding and deaths of our friends
on various dates in Buca, Umraniye, Diyarbakir, Ulucanlar, and Burdur
prisons be brought to justice. Release our friends who have permanent
physical problems, those who incurred physical problems during the 1996
hunger strike, and those who have been wounded in various assaults and have
not been able to receive treatment. Bring torturers to justice. Abolish all
the anti-democratic laws standing in the way of the people's struggle for
democracy and freedom, and end the oppressions."

"Wherever we are, fascists cannot even exist.
Those who spill the blood of our people, our dear
comrades and who murder them, cannot breathe the
same air we do, and nor can their collaborators.
Fascists have no rights. They are not human. They
are the enemies of humanity. Murder, massacres,
torture, drugs, prostitution, all kind of
indignity and immorality are their business.
Fascists have no right to exist wherever we are.
It is the duty of everyone who considers
themselves human to punish them and not to let
them survive on earth." - DHKP-C Prisoners
