December 29, 2000 Number 304

THE DEATH FASTS ARE CONTINUING ON THE 71ST DAY.

THEY ARE TORTURING OUR FRIENDS AND RELATIVES IN THE 'F' TYPE PRISONS, EVERY
DAY WE ARE LOSING ANOTHER OF OUR LIVES

THE LIES OF THE AUTHORITIES ARE CONTINUING

While they are killing our friends and relatives, those that have been
placed alive in the 'F' Type prisons are being tortured in ways not even
practised in Nazi camps and they are forcing our friends and relatives to
lead a life without honour. The murderers of our relatives and friends are
continuing to pile lie upon lie instead of coming up with a solution to any
of the problems. In operations and the Death Fast we have lost 29 of our
friends and relatives. Those who have been brought to the 'F' prisons are
being tortured several times a day for refusing to accept the authorities'
attempts to impose dishonourable sanctions on them.

This is a statement made by someone who was went to a relative who had been
in Umraniye Prison and was then taken to the cell-type prison at Kandira:
Here is what Huseyin Ozdemir said, two of whose sons are in prison:
"Bulent Ozdemir: (IN HAYDARPASA NUMUNE HOSPITAL) The soldiers fired shotgun
pellets in our prison dormitory, I and Riza fell to the floor and then stood
up again. This time the soldiers started to open fire with a Kalashnikov
assault rifle. Three bullets struck me in various parts of my body. Riza was
wounded. Afterwards a doctor named Tolga came to our dormitory. He said of
my friends who were on the Death Fast that "they're healthier than I am".
Three soldiers broke both of Umit Ilter's legs. Three soldiers fractured
Ergul Acer's skull and broke his arms and legs. They practised torture until
morning in front of the dormitory. The officers deliberately stepped in mud
and then tried to get us to kiss their boots. All of us were subjected to
object rape with truncheons.

Ahmet Ozdemir: (IN KANDIRA 'F' TYPE CELL PRISON) We are continuing the Death
Fast. During the attack we were trying to get doctors from the Medical
Chamber to come and treat our injured people. Everybody was injured. Every
morning and every night, while they were counting us they tortured us. I
have about three days left. I am tied to my people and my comrades and I
will remain that way. Greet them from me. We are continuing the Death Fast
in spite of all of these tortures."

Hilmi Surul's statement concerning what his son Tayyar Surul said:
"Tayyar was wounded in the right leg by the explosion of a rocket-propelled
grenade and received no medical treatment. During the operation there was a
constant bombardment going on. From the roof they poured they poured petrol
down on them and set his friends on fire. He said that a soldier had been
shot by other soldiers. My son has lost too much weight, in Kandira he was
tortured by a sergeant. In all my life I have not seen anything like this.
It is like they are almost killing us, reviving us and then nearly killing
us again, over and over."

Menekse Bal tells what her husband Muharrem Bal experienced there:
"My husband is on hunger strike and he cannot stand up and he speaks ith
difficulty. Their health is not good. They have burn marks on their faces,
arms and legs. They cannot find out what happened to their friends. They try
to contact one another by shouting. They are continually being beaten and
tortured on the pretext of carrying out a count, and the soldiers expect
them to stand to attention when they come into the cell, and when they
refuse, they are tortured. They are given clothes by their families but the
clothing is torn to shreds. They cannot see each other but they can
understand from each other's voices that they are in a bad situation. Their
needs are not being met. They (soldiers or guards) say, give us money, but
the prisoners do not receive anything. My husband told me to keep my morale
high because there are 2,000 people here and they are on the Death Fast. We
will not accept medical treatment under these conditions. I told them the
same thing to them. Tea and cigarettes are not being given to prisoners, nor
do they receive all the clothing that has been sent. We will not stop
looking into what our friends and relatives are experiencing."

YESTERDAY THEY WERE HOLDING UP THE 'F' TYPE PRISONS AS A MODEL, SO LET'S SEE
THEM OPEN THE CELL DOORS TO THE MEDIA NOW!
