*1. COLOMBIA: CONGRESS MEMBER KILLED

Colombian Congress member Diego Turbay Cote, his mother Ines
Cote, three bodyguards and Alvaro Dussan, a correspondent for the
Cadena Radial Colombiana radio network, were killed on Dec. 29 in
an attack by an armed group on a highway near Florencia in the
southwestern Caqueta region, according to the Radionet radio
network. Turbay Cote was a member of the opposition Liberal Party
and the president of the lower house's Peace Commission.

The police and local journalists attributed the attack to the
14th Front of the leftist rebel Revolutionary Armed Forces of
Colombia (FARC), although other journalists noted that rightwing
paramilitary groups are also active in the area. Independent
Congress member Antonio Navarro Wolf--a former leader of the M-19
guerrilla organization, which disbanded a decade ago--expressed
his hope "that the origin of the ambush is made known, but we
definitely condemn the way the escalation of the war in Colombia
is coming about through the murder of unarmed persons,
defenseless civilians, non-combatants." [Clarin (Buenos Aires)
