Subject: "[Ozgurluk.Org]" Turkey get 10 billion from IMF to buy American
military Helicopters

The financial breathing space of ten billion dollar which
Turkey received last week from the IMF, thanks to especially American
support, comes at just the right moment.

Ten billion dollar, that's about the amount that the country just spent on
the international market for modern weapon systems.

Especially in the US.

Last week, the Turkish department of defence announced it wanted to
order six radar air planes from Boeing with an option for two additional
planes, worth one and a half billion dollar. Two weeks ago, the Turkish
government revealed the would start negotiations with Israel Military
Industries, IMI, for the modernisation of some 1.000 M-60 tanks, worth
2,5 billion. This is just a temporary solution: between 2004 an 2008, new
tanks have to be bought, worth 7 billion. The American Abrams-tank is
regarded as favourite in the competition in which also German, Ukrainian
an Israeli companies play a role. Not even a half year ago, Turkey
decided to order 145 King Cobra combat helicopter from the American
company Bell. Costs: 4 billion dollar.

And also on the navy field, Turkey is eager to buy. Three weeks ago, a
contract was signed for the delivery of six French second-hand frigates,
worth 200 million dollar. This is also makeshift. Soon, eight new corvettes
have to be build, worth 1,25 billion. Turkey plans to spend 150 billion
dollar in total in the next 30 years for the modernisation of the armed
forces. On the wish-slip of the Turkish generals are also a photo-spy
satellite, a range of anti-aircraft missiles and the Israeli Arrow-system
for
the defence against ballistic missiles. This inclination to buy is even
more controversial, regarding the fact that the tensions between Turkey
and heir enemy Greece subsided considerably over the last years.
Whether or not the 10 billion dollar from the IMF are sufficient to get
Turkey out of its crisis, remains to be seen.

Today, governor Gaza Ercel of the Turkish central bank pleads in
Frankfurt with the consortium of Western banks to lend Turkey large
sums, and to continue their credits for the short term without change.
