The above description will undoubtedly evoke images of Iran under the Islamic Republic dictatorship. But no, we are not talking about Iran, even though you could be subjected to the same mistreatment under the regime of the Mullahs. What we are talking about is the new face of the United States under globalization - the absolute rule of corporations. Under the new corporate rule, the people's votes no longer count. Ballots are discarded by the tens of thousands without any fear of rebuke. In poor areas, ballots are miscounted in favor of the rich. Minorities, especially African-Americans are turned away from polling stations through a-thousand-and-one tricks. Millions of minorities, especially African-Americans are hunted down, processed through the court system, and deprived of their rights as citizens, including the right to vote. The new globalized, corporate rule has no concern for the environment. Forests are there to be logged and exploited. There is little regard for the dumping of the toxic waste into our water sources. Food items are genetically modified and patented to fully belong to the producing corporations. They have even attempted to patent human modified genes - presumably to produce a new race of slaves. It is precisely in response to such actions that the people need to organize and protest. On Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, IACUS will join thousands of people who will march and rally to protest at George W. Bush's inauguration in Washington, D.C. and San Francisco. We will be demonstrating against the incoming Bush administration and its racist, sexist, militaristic, anti-labor and pro-big business policies. We call for a profound social transformation, to a society where people's needs come before profits, where every person has the right to a good-paying job, decent housing, healthcare, education, childcare and a clean environment. Only a mass people's movement can bring about real change.
