Indian PM initiates boost of ties between ruling PartiesIndian Prime
Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee suggested developing relations between India's
ruling BJP Party and the Communist Party of Vietnam, CPV, during his meeting
with General Secretary Le Kha Phieu in Hanoi on January 9.

Mr Vajpayee is making an official visit to Vietnam to boost the "traditional
friendly and co-operative ties forged by President Ho Chi Minh and Prime
Minister Jawaharlal Nehru."

He has pledged a boost in bilateral co-operation, especially in investment,
science and technology, as well as at multilateral forums such as the
Non-Aligned Movement, South-South co-operation, the ASEAN Security Forum and
the United Nations.

In return, he has received his host's commitment to "a constant
consolidation and development" of their comprehensive bilateral co-operative
ties in the interest of their countries and for peace, independence,
democracy and social progress in the world.

General Secretary Phieu told his guest that he appreciated India's respect
of the time-honoured friendship and multi-faceted co-operation with Vietnam
as part of its foreign policy for independence, peace, non-alignment and
regional co-operation.

He emphasised Vietnam's efforts to quicken renovation so as to make a
prosperous and strong nation and a just and democratic society.

The Indian prime minister took the opportunity to reiterate his invitation
for General Secretary to a visit to India. The latter accepted the
invitation with great pleasure. (VNA)


Party chief stresses importance of relationship with LaosThe Vietnamese
Party, State and people would always value constantly consolidating and
developing the loyal and pure Vietnam-Laos relationship, Vietnam Communist
Party General Secretary Le Kha Phieu said.

The general secretary, who was speaking at his reception on January 9 for a
delegation of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party's Commission for
Propaganda and Training, emphasised that these relations were beneficial to
each country's people, peace and national independence as well as democracy
and social progress in the region and the world.

He warmly welcomed Chairman Osakan Thammatheva saying the visit would make
an active contribution to developing the friendship, special solidarity and
comprehensive co-operation between Vietnam and Laos.

He praised the great victories recorded by the Lao fraternal people under
the leadership of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party.

He said that he wished for the Lao people to obtain further achievements and
build Laos into a peaceful, independent, democratic and prosperous country.

He asked his Lao guests to convey his best regards to President Khamtay
Siphandone and other Lao leaders.

Mr Osakan Thammatheva, who is also Politburo member of the LPRP Central
Committee, reiterated that the Lao Party, government and people would do
their best to unceasingly strengthen the Laos-Vietnam friendship, special
solidarity and comprehensive co-operation.

He expressed his pleasure at the great achievements recorded by the
Vietnamese people in their renovation process and wished them greater
achievements in scoring the goal of a rich people, a strong country, a
democratic, equitable and civilised society.

He also wished the Communist Party of Vietnam's Ninth National Congress

Vietnam-India trade should match potential,
says Indian PMVietnamese and Indian companies should exert efforts to boost
trade, investment and co-operation so as to match their potential and in the
interests of the people in both countries, visiting Indian Prime Minister A
B Vajpayee said on January 9.

He was speaking in Hanoi on January 9 with Vietnamese and Indian business
representatives attending the fourth joint meeting of the Vietnam-India
Commercial Council.

He expressed his admiration for Vietnam's progress in renovation and said
that the on-going economic reforms in India and Vietnam would help both
identify promising fields for economic co-operation.

He also expressed his pleasure to be in the presence of Indian companies in
Vietnam and applauded their efforts to promote bilateral ties, particularly
in trade, investment science-technology, information technology,
agriculture, healthcare and education.

He said that India was willing to provide loans and share experiences with
Vietnam to enhance co-operation.

He emphasised the need to have the economic content in India-Vietnam
relations to match the demand of the region and the world.

Close economic co-operation with Vietnam was a key element in India's effort
to boost ties with ASEAN, he said.

During his Vietnam visit, Mr Vajpayee attended the inauguration ceremony for
the Ranbaxy Company, a pharmaceutical joint venture between Vietnam and
India in southern Binh Duong province, and witnessed signing ceremonies for
transport, oil and gas agreements between the two countries.

Earlier, he and his entourage paid floral tributes at the Ho Chi Minh
Mausoleum and visited President Ho Chi Minh's office and residence.

On the same day, the Indian PM received General Vo Nguyen Giap and Defence
Minister Pham Van Tra, and met with Vietnamese scholars who have studied and
worked in India. (VNA)


Italian, Vietnamese Party officials wish to strengthen tiesVisiting General
Secretary of the Party of Italian Communists Oliviero Diliberto has
reiterated his Party's desire to strengthen friendship and solidarity with
the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) in the new century.

Mr Diliberto, who arrived in Vietnam last week for a working visit, was
speaking at a reception held in the capital yesterday by the Hanoi Municipal
Party Committee. 

The Italian Party leader also expressed his delight at seeing with his own
eyes the achievements recorded in the Doi Moi (Renovation) process, saying
these gains demonstrated the correctness of the policies of Doi Moi
initiated by the CPV.

Welcoming the Italian guests, Deputy Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal
Committee Phung Huu Phu thanked the Italian communists and people for their
support and assistance given to the Vietnamese people in the past and at the
current national construction.

Earlier, the Italian delegation held talks with a CPV delegation led by
permanent member of the Standing Board of the Party Central Committee's
Politburo Pham The Duyet. Both sides discussed measures to further the
co-operation between the two Parties.

The Italian Party leader was received on January 4 by CPV General Secretary
Le Kha Phieu, who said that Vietnam wished to boost its relationship with
Italy for mutual benefit. (VNA)


NA chairman thanks Dutch for their help

National Assembly Chairman Nong Duc Manh has thanked the Dutch people for
their valuable help in Vietnam's past struggle for national independence and
the present national construction.

Mr Manh on January 9 told the visiting Chairwoman of the Dutch Lower House
Committee for External Relations, Margaretha De Boer, that Dutch-assisted
programmes and projects had brought practical results, thus contributing to
Vietnam's socio-economic development.

Mr  Manh welcomed the delegation's Vietnam visit and described it as a vivid
manifestation of the friendship and co-operation between the two
parliaments, governments and people.

He was delighted at the increasing development of the multi-faceted ties
between Vietnam and the Netherlands.

He spoke of fine results of working sessions between the Dutch delegation
and its Vietnamese counterpart and other Vietnamese agencies and said he
believed in the continued sustainable development of the two countries in
the new millennium.

Chairman Manh briefed the delegation about Vietnam's situation and
emphasised its external policies of openness, in which Vietnam had always
attached importance to its relations with the Netherlands, and its striving
for the goal of a rich people, a strong country and an equitable, democratic
and civilised society.

In reply, Chairwoman De Boer said that the Netherlands was willing to share
its experience to help Vietnam in national construction and development.

National Assembly Deputy Chairman Mai Thuc Lan received the Dutch delegation

Tet gifts given to the poor

The Association for Disabled People and Orphans paid visits and presented
gifts to the disabled people and orphans in special difficulties for Tet
(Lunar New Year) Festival in Ha Tinh, Lai Chau, Vinh Long, Ninh Thuan, Binh
Thuan, Phu Yen, Kon Tum provinces and Haiphong city.

The association, together with an organisation from the United States,
presented 345 wheelchairs for disabled people in Haiphong city and Thai Binh
province. It received, in co-ordination with the Vietnam Fatherland Front
Central Committee, 300 wheelchairs from Taiwan worth more than VND 2 billion
to give to disabled people in Ha Nam, Quang Ninh, Da Nang, Phu Yen, An Giang
and Gia Lai. The association also provided vocational training courses to
500 disabled people so as to help create chances for them to find jobs.

Also on the lunar New Year, Da Nang city spent about VND 1.4 billion for Tet
gifts to tens of thousand families of war martyrs, war invalids and sick
soldiers, to those who rendered great services to the revolution, to
convalescent centres for wounded and sick soldiers and to soldiers stationed
on Spratly island. 

The City Party Committee, the People's Committee and the Da Nang city's
Fatherland Front sent delegations to visit and present Tet gifts to Vietnam
Heroic Mothers, families of war martyrs and invalids. They also planned to
restore the heroes' cemeteries.

Dong Thap province spent about VND 3 billion for Tet gifts to families of
priority policy beneficiaries and VND 2 billion to buy 1,000 tonnes of rice
to support poor households in flooded areas.
