ECUADOR: The Army attacks civilians in the East; Four people are dead
In eastern Ecuador, the Army has used troops and helicopters in carrying out
an armed assault on the people of Puerto Napo and other citizens of Napo
province, where the people have been engaged in actions protesting the
government and the State of Emergency, under the leadership of CONAIE and
the
organizations of the PATRIOTIC FRONT.
Two people died in the military action, at 6:30 am. The two are Juan
Garces,
19 years old a teacher from the UNE (National Union of Educators in Ecuador)
whose name still hasn't been confirmed. Another five received serious
injuries and have been hospitalized. These are Klinger Grefa, David Tapuy,
Marco Grefa, and Mateo Grefa. A number of individuals were also detained.
In the city of TENA, the capital of the same province, the Army has made use
of firearms and tear-gas. It is here that our compañero Carlos Cabrera
Rojas
was assassinated by the military forces and we have just learned of the
untimely death of a child as well.
These actions of war against an unarmed population, are continuing today
well
into the afternoon. Radio Fuego from TENA has been closed down and taken
over by the military forces.
In Costa, in the Los Rios province, popular leaders are being hounded as if
they were delinquents. Adolfo Puente Tello, Provincial Director of the
Popular Democratic Movement (MPD - Movimiento Popular Democrático) was
arrested in a way that made a show of the violence perpetrated by the
special
units. Luis Palma was also arresteed. He was the leader of the minority
small-businessmen and a member of the PATRIOTIC FRONT.
Meanwhile, in Quito, our compañero Samuel Vargas, National Vice President if
the National Union of Educators (UNE - Unión Nacional de Educadores) remains
in detention.
The bombs located a few days ago in the offices of a bank and a transport
company in Quito, were not claimed by any organization and, on the contrary,
rumours are circulating that this is another military action designed in
order to justify the brutal repression that is being carried out against the
peoples of Ecuador, in order to implement the recipes of the IMF.
The POPULAR FRONT and other organizations have approved the People's Strike
for this Wednesday, February 7th and that the actions in the common struggle
of all sectors continue. CONAIE activists are maintaining their hunger
strike initiated this last Saturday and other companeros have joined this
action today. The leaders of the CONAIE are attempting to maintain a
dialogue with the government, which is reflected in the bourgeois press.
However with the repressive actions the dialogue has been interrupted "due
to
a lack of guarantees"
