Tripoli

Namibian President Sam Nujoma arrived in Tripoli late Wednesday for a
working visit to Libya.

General Mustapha Kharroubi, member of the historic command of the Libyan
revolution, met Nujoma on arrival at Maatigua airport.

The president was immediately driven to Col. Muammar Kadhafi's Tripoli
residence where he had a first meeting with the Libyan leader focussed,
according to official sources, on African current events and on
strengthening bilateral relations between Libya and Namibia.

The Libyan television announced that during the discussions, Nujoma stressed
the importance of African unity, as recognised by the proclamation of the
African Union, which should enable the continent to better face up to the
exigencies of globalisation.

Nujoma also reaffirmed his country's total support to the Libyan Jamahirya
in the Lockerbie affair and reiterated Namibia's appeal for the definitive
lifting of the embargo imposed on Tripoli.

According to the local press, the Namibian leader has called for the release
of the Libyan national convicted of bombing a Pan American jetliner over
Lockerbie, Scotland now considered by Tripoli as hostage of a political
trial.
