We will Fight Together Against the Sharon Government

Ariel Sharon's election to the post of prime minister, though receiving
only one third of the eligible voters., poses a challenge to all those
who struggle for a just peace, for democracy, equality, and social
justice - to do all possible the strengthen a left coalition, Jews
and Arabs, that will lead the struggle to shorten the life span of the
right wing annexationalist government that will drag us into a war and
bring disaster to both peoples.

Behind the smoke screen of empty words of peace Sharon plans to tighten
the siege of the Palestinian people, to increase the oppression, to
hound the Palestinian national leadership and to speed up the building
of Jewish settlements. Sharon totally rejects the only chance to
achieve an Israeli-Palestinian peace - the implementation of the UN
resolutions, that require an Israeli withdrawal from all the occupied
territories, the establishment of a Palestinian State along side
Israel, a solution to the refugee problem, and the establishment of
two capitals in Jerusalem.

Sharon, whose visit to the mosques purposely incited the present
violence, refuses to continue the negotiations from where they left off
in Taba, though the peoples of both sides paid a heavy price to reach
that point.

Behind the empty promises to advance the Arab population of Israel,
Sharon plans the further "Judaization" of the Galilee, the
appropriation of Arab lands in the Negev, and to work towards the
political isolation of the Arab voters.

Behind the empty phrases of concern for the weak, Sharon plans to
accelerate the process of privatization, of lowering the taxes levied
on the employers and the rich, and the cut back of social services.

The heads of the large corporations, as well as the representatives of
the foreign investors, publicly came out with a call for a broad based
government, which would be able to carry out privatization, curtail
workers rights, and increase capital's profits.

The American pressure on Sharon to establish a broad based coalition
are intended to ease Sharon's acceptance by the international community
and especially the Arab world.

These are the motives, along with his desire to rule till the scheduled
elections in 2003, for Sharon's call to the Labour Party to join his
government.

The outgoing Ehud Barak's announcement that the Taba Accords and the
Clinton parameters are non-binding, is meant to pave the way for the
Labour Party's negotiations towards entering the Sharon government. The
enthusiasm of the Labour leadership to enter such a coalition is witness
to the bankruptcy of this party, will to be the window dressing for a
policy of war and annexation of the Likud and the rest of the Right. We
criticize the willingness of parties like Meretz (Center-Left party) to
even enter coalition negotiations with Sharon.

The CPI and the DFPE, standing firm in their activities towards the
unity of the Arab population, in the struggle for equality, warn
against the dangers of isolating the Israeli Arab community, which would
play into the hands of the Right. A retreat from the political arena of
the Arab population could lead to a cessation of Jewish-Arab
cooperation, the only guarantee to success in the struggle against
discrimination, racism, and expropriation of lands.

Considering the policies and probable makeup of the Sharon government,
the DFPE will reject any contact to support such a coalition. The DFPE
will continue, both in the Knesset (Parliament), and outside its
walls, to be the fighting opposition, to rally all the forces to speed
the demise of the Sharon government.

The DFPE and the CPI, being aware of the grave dangers inherent in
Sharon's foreign and social policies, feel that the only way to avoid
catastrophe is to work towards a wide as possible coalition of forces -
parliamentary and extra parliamentary - of Jews and Arabs, that will
build together a democratic alternative to the ruling party and will
fight for peace, social justice, full equality for all citizens of
both sexes, and for the protection of the environment.
