Kadhafi Invites Arabs to Join the African Union Panafrican News Agency (Dakar) March 28, 2001 Posted to the web March 28, 2001 Amman, Jordan The leader of the Libyan Revolution Col. Mouammar Kadhafi last Tuesday in Amman invited Arab countries to join the African Union. Speaking to reporters at the Arab summit winding up in Amman, Jordan today, Kadhafi said the third of the Arab community living outside Africa should move in with the two-thirds on the continent and join the African Union "which is the only space we have." The Libyan revolutionary leader said he was pleased with the summit's decision regarding the Lockerbie affair. Kadhafi said Arab leaders and the Arab League denounced the imprisonment of the Libyan national whom they consider a political hostage convicted for political reasons. Explaining the reasons for his participation this time around, after boycotting the Cairo extraordinary summit, Kadhafi said he was persuaded that the meeting in Egypt would be incapable of finding a solution to the situation at the time. Colonel Mouammar Kadhafi, who addressed his Arab peers Tuesday evening, insisted on being heard in camera, thus forcing Jordanian television to momentarily halt its live broadcast of declarations from the podium. Explaining the incident, Kadhafi said he had "a serious statement to make, which he did not want accessed to the press before its examination and adoption by Arab leaders." ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Copyright © 2001 Panafrican News Agency.
