Izmir - Turkish Daily News

At least 45 inmates on death fast have quit drinking water with
sugar and salt. Following the hospitalization and force feeding of
Sincan Prison inmate Ramazan Cicek, 30 inmates on the death fast
in Ankara hospital and 15 inmates on the death fast in Bayrampasa
hospital will no longer drink sugar and salt added water.

Fatih Surenkok, chairman of the Izmir Chamber of Doctors said that
on Friday doctors should have checked the inmates on the death fast,
but for some reason they were not permitted to. "These inmates quit
taking B1 vitamins. This B1 vitamin was the most important element
in keeping them alive. However, some inmates have quit taking water
with sugar and salt. This situation will cause the death of these
inmates on the death fast within two to five days."

He stated that the Justice Ministry didn't take any step to end
this event: "The government expect a logical move from these inmates
on the death fast. However, nobody can expect these people to take
a logical step because their physiological conditions do not allow
them to. The government should urgently do something to end this
event."

According to TAYAD (The Association for the Solidarity of Inmates'
Families), some inmates on the death fast were forcibly hospitalized.
Five inmates Ulas Goktas, Gursel Akmaz, Tamer Cadirci, Gokhan Ozocak,
Kenan Korkankorkmaz in Buca prison were forcibly hospitalized because
of their health conditions. Ozgur Gudenoglu in Usak Prison was
hospitalized. Ozgul Dede, Alev Yildiz, Fatma Guzel in Women and
Child Prison in Istanbul were taken to Bayrampasa hospital. Esma
Arslanbogan in Malatya prison was taken to Turgut Ozal Hospital.
