A U.S. State Department official in Washington declined to provide specific reasons for the closures. A decision was to be made over the weekend on whether to reopen the offices Monday, the official said. Guillermo Stirling, Uruguay's interior minister, said the U.S. decision was apparently linked to violence in the Middle East between Palestinians and Israelis, but he did not elaborate. Uruguay is home to a sizable Palestinian community. Stirling said he did not know of any threats against the embassy, nor had Uruguayan authorities detected any ``unusual movements'' along the borders. ``The embassy authorities asked us for a reinforcement of security and we naturally complied with their request,'' Stirling said. The U.S. embassy in Quito, Ecuador, was also under increased police guard Friday. In Argentina, four flights from Buenos Aires to major U.S. cities were delayed for several hours because of a telephone bomb threat late Thursday, federal police said. Authorities conducted an exhaustive search of planes, passengers and luggage, but found nothing, Argentine police commander Alberto Beltrame said. Ezeiza International Airport returned to normal operations Friday and the flights departed for Miami, New York and Los Angeles. Copyright ©2001 Associated Press. All rights reserved.
