CUBAN ECONOMY MINISTER OPTIMISTIC ON SUGAR, OIL PRODUCTION
Havana, April 6 (ain)--Cuba will fulfill its projected goals for sugar
production for this year, said Jose Luis Rodriguez, Cuban Minister of
Economy, despite setbacks suffered in this year's harvest.
He explained that the Cuban sugar harvest, which has been affected by
drought, should end by the end of this month or the beginning of May.
Rodriguez added that the problems encountered this year are not irreversible
and that the country can efficiently produce about 3.7 millions tons of
sugar.
A very difficult struggle has been waged over the last decade to assure that
the country will survive the economic pressures imposed by the enemies of
the Revolution, Rodriguez said. But, the Cuban Minister of the Economy said,
this year the economy should improve due to successes of the tourism and
transportion industried He also noted that foreign investments in the
country have reached more than $5 billion and said efforts to increase and
improve such enterprises are going fairly well.
Rodriguez said also that the petroleum industry in Cuba is doing well and
predicted further growth. Last year, Cuba produced over 3.2 million tons of
Cuban oil, accounting for 52 percent of the national electricity demand. He
hopes to raise the electric cover up to He expressed optimism that Cuba will
be able to provide 70 percent of demand in the coming years, with a total
expected annual production of 6 millions tons of oil.
