Subject: [downwithcapitalism] FW: 'Free trade' protests in Buenos Aires

Associated Press. 6 April, 2001 - 08:02 PM. Protests Flare Into Violence
at Free Trade Summit in Buenos Aires.

BUENOS AIRES, Argentina (AP) - Demonstrators pelted riot police with
rocks and shattered shop windows Friday evening, after a day of largely
peaceful protests against a trade summit turned violent.

Riot police responded with volleys of tear gas as a crowd of at least
2,000 demonstrators marched in downtown Buenos Aires near a luxury hotel
where three days of talks on free trade were taking place.

Officials said very few of the 2,000 protesters took part in rioting.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or arrests.

"No to free trade!" demonstrators shouted as they swarmed through the
downtown area and bottle rockets lit by protesters screeched overhead.
Many people covered their noses from the stench of tear gas.

The protests came midway through the summit, focusing on ways to
complete a hemisphere-wide free trade pact by 2005.

The protests had begun peacefully earlier in the day.

"Don't sell out, government ministers!" labor leader Hugo Moyano shouted
out in an earlier, peaceful protest speech Friday afternoon at the Plaza
de Mayo, the central square fronting Argentina's Government House where
police estimate 4,000 protesters gathered. "We're going to fight to the
end!"

Police said another 3,500 demonstrators took part in a separate march
that began at the Congress and wound its way to a downtown hotel where
talks were taking place.
