Associated Press. 7 April 2001 - 03:22 AM. Maoist Rebels Kill 28
Policemen in Nepal

KATHMANDU, Nepal (AP) - In a fresh outbreak of violence, Maoist rebels
attacked a police station in a remote mountain village, killing at least
28 policemen and injuring 12, state-run Radio Nepal said Saturday.

With Friday's attack, 65 policemen have been killed and 54 are missing
in a week of assaults on police stations. Police say a large number of
rebels have also been killed, but did not have a number.

The rebels attacked the police station late Friday at Naumule village,
about 250 miles west of the capital Katmandu. In a battle that police
said lasted several hours, the rebels hurled crude bombs, shot officers
and set the station on fire.

The rebels had called a national strike on Friday to demand the
abolition of the constitutional monarchy. Friday was the 11th
anniversary of the declaration of [so-called] democracy in Nepal in
1990, when King Birendra was stripped of absolute power and a
parliamentary government was established.

In the days preceding the anniversary, the rebels had killed 37
policemen in two attacks on remote village police stations.

Since the rebels, who model themselves after Peru's Shining Path
guerrillas, began fighting the government in 1996, 343 policemen and
1,027 rebel fighters have been killed. Another 282 civilian have also
died.
