Trade unionists from 60 countries to
attend Cuban Workers Congress
The forum proposes to seek joint action on the part
of the international labor movement against the plague
of globalization threatening humanity

BY SONIA SANCHEZ
(Granma International staff writer)

THE role of the national and international workers movement
against neoliberal globalization will be the central theme of
an international solidarity encounter with the revolutionary
cause defended by the Cuban people. It is to take place in
Havana, as part of the 18th Congress of the Central
Organization of Cuban Trade Unions (CTC) on April 29 and 30
and May Day.

In the presence of some 400 foreign guests and the principal
leaders of the national trade unions, the Tribunal of
Solidarity with Cuba and Against Neoliberal Globalization will
begin on May 2 at the International Conference Center.

At the CTC-sponsored encounter, Osvaldo Martnez, director of
the Center for Research on the World Economy, will chair a
discussion on the world economic situation, an issue that on
account of its significance is expected to spark strong debate
among the participants, CTC official Agustn Lpez told Granma
International.

Lpez also noted that the forums main goal is to decide on
joint action against neoliberal globalization on the part of
the international labor movement.

The significance of issues related to the Free Trade Area of
the Americas (FTAA) and the Southern Common Market
(MERCOSUR) could also be raised at the congress if the
occasion presents itself, Lpez added.

In that context, Leonel Gonzlez, CTC international relations
secretary, recently emphasized the importance of analyzing
what could be done in Latin America and the Caribbean, in
terms of consequences for the region, if the U.S. project
known as the FTAA is instituted.

Delegations from around 60 countries will attend the 18th CTC
Congress as guests, among them more than 100 U.S. trade
unionists and representatives of virtually all the Caribbean,
Latin American, European, Asian and African labor
organizations.
