Ukrainian Communists Rally Against Kuchma. Analysis at bottom. KIEV Around 1,000 Communists rallied on Tuesday on May Day in the Ukrainian capital to protest against President Leonid Kuchma, whom they accused of reducing the former Soviet country to misery. To the sound of Soviet anthems, the procession slowly wound its way through the city center, bearing red Communist flags, portraits of Lenin and banners proclaiming: "All power to the workers" and "Out with the Bourgeoisie." The protestors did not mince their words in reference to their leaders. "They should all be hanged, Kuchma and company," said Lidia, a 75-year-old retiree out protesting despite her age. "Those in power have stolen everything. Our pensions, they're nothing at all. Sometimes we don't eat for days," said Maria and Svetlana, two former nurses. Ukraine has been embroiled in a deep economic and political crisis since independence. Despite signs of improvement in recent years, most Ukrainians continue to live in poverty, with average wages sitting at around 50 dollars (56 euros) a month and pensions at 20 dollars. According to a recent opinion poll, 70 percent of the population say their financial position is "bad" or "very bad". The country has also been shaken by a political crisis without precedent in which Kuchma has been accused of links to the murder of a prominent opposition journalist. <>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<>--<> The above disturbs the almost universal party line of the bourgeois media in depicting the communists as unwitting agents of Kuchma by collaborating with the capitalist 'oligarchs' to oust Yushchenko. Now that they have ousted Yushchenko, their attentions turn to Kuchma---and, if successful, their attentions will---most likely---turn to the 'oligarchs' in due time.
