Subject: [downwithcapitalism] FW: Zyuganov on U.S. aggression

Interfax. 02.05.2001 11:23. Communist leader thinks Russia must protect
its national interests in case U.S. withdraws from ABM Treaty.

MOSCOW President Bush's statement about the deployment of the NMD
system and actual withdrawal from the 1972 ABM Treaty "is not a new
thing to anyone," Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov said.

Zyuganov stressed in his interview with Interfax that the U.S. "has long
been ignoring and in fact withdrew from all international treaties and
agreements a long time ago, which was shown by the bombing of Yugoslavia
and the fact that the U.S. has classified a number of countries as rogue
states."

"The main thing in this situation is that the Russian Foreign Ministry
and the government should in general not give up, but behave properly
and actively and protect the national interests of our country," the
Communist leader said.

He recalled that when the START-2 Treaty was ratified by the Russian
State Duma, the united left opposition categorically opposed the
document. "We had expected the U.S. to act in this way. Even at that
time [when the START-2 Treaty was ratified] we pointed out such a
danger, but the Kremlin insisted on ratification of START-2, and now we
have to deal with the consequences of this inept foreign policy,"
Zyuganov said.
