Subject: [downwithcapitalism] FW: Political Instability in Ukraine

UNIAN news agency. 2 May 2001. 5,000-strong rally in Donetsk demands
revival of Soviet Union; 2,000-strong rally in Eastern city want
president out, joining Russia. Comment at bottom.

DONETSK A rally of left-wing forces was held in Donetsk on the
international day of working solidarity. Donetsk Regional organizations
of the All-Ukrainian Trade Union of Workers, the Communist Party of
Ukraine, the Socialist Party of Ukraine and the Progressive Socialist
Party of Ukraine took part. Nearly 5,000 people participated.

Participants in the rally adopted a statement which was read out by the
co-head of the Donetsk Regional Trade Union of Workers, Oleksandr
Shapovalov. The document in particular "vigorously condemns political
terror, the infringement of rights and freedoms of the working people
and the persecution of communist and workers' activists for their
political beliefs", and expresses disagreement with the course of
social-economic reforms of Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma "who has
led millions of people to unemployment, poverty and a desperate
situation".

The statement demands that President Kuchma be ousted following the
prime minister; an end to the collapse of industry, the closure of mines
and price increases for food, communal services and transport, and an
increase in salaries and pensions to the level of the minimum income.
The statement ends with the slogan: "Let us revive our Motherland - the
Soviet Union!".

................................

LUHANSK About 2,000 people have taken part in a May Day rally of
working solidarity in Luhansk, which was prepared by the Regional
organizations of the Communist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of
Ukraine and the Komsomol.

The demonstrators displayed the following slogans: "To liquidate the
institute presidency!", "For Ukraine without Kuchma!", and "For union of
Ukraine, Belarus and Russia".

Participants in the rally adopted a resolution calling for resignation
of [Ukrainian] President Leonid Kuchma and for amending the constitution
to liquidate the presidency and introduce a parliamentary form of
government in Ukraine.

Note the discrepancy the above reports present when compared to the
'Oppositionist Ukraine Komsomol' statement posted prior. The six signers
claim that the communists in power are 'all[ied] with the bonaparte-like
Kuchma regime,' yet the demonstrations reported by UNIAN clearly state
that the Communist Party of Ukraine, Socialist Party of Ukraine and the
Komsomol are demanding the removal of Kuchma.
