President joins youths in 'Environmental' Saturday

President Tran Duc Luong speaks at the launching ceremony.

President Tran Duc Luong joined young people in a campaign for protection of
environment and water resources launched in northern Thai Nguyen province on
May 5.

The launching of the campaign, called 'Saturdays for Voluntary Protection of
Environment and Water Resources,' involved young people from six provinces
along the Cau river, namely Thai Nguyen, Bac Kan, Vinh Phuc, Bac Ninh, Bac
Giang and Hai Duong.

Mr Luong, who is also Politburo member of the Communist Party of Vietnam
Central Committee, called on the young generation to join people of all
walks of life to remove pollution threats to the environment, especially in
urban areas, industrial zones and increasingly-polluted rural areas. Those
threats have become a barrier to national development and made a health
hazard to people, especially the young generation, the State leader said.

"Rapid, efficient and sustainable development, and economic growth along
with progress, social justice and environmental protection are highlighted
in the national socio-economic development strategy for the 2001-2010 period
as set by the Ninth Party Congress," emphasised the president.

He stressed the necessity to help the whole society fully aware that
protecting the environment and water resources is a major task, which should
not be done in just a day or a campaign but should be promoted into part of
the cultural life of every citizen, especially the young.

"Every commune, every street, every office, every factory and every family
should emulate each other and pledge to build up a green, clean and
beautiful environment," Mr Luong urged.

Efforts should be made to "harmonise socio-economic development with
environmental protection towards a sustainable development orientation so as
to ensure an environment of high-quality air, soil, water and beauty-spots
and other natural factors of national standards for all as the tasks set for
the 2001-2005 period by the ninth Party Congress," the president said in
conclusion.

President Luong then joined representatives from the Ho Chi Minh Communist
Youth Union (HCMCYU) Central Committee, relevant ministries and agencies and
HCMCYU members in a ceremony to kick off a plan to plant trees in northern
Thai Nguyen province.

The president also met workers at Nam Son rubbish treatment complex in
Hanoi's Soc Son district.

He asked relevant ministries, local agencies and rubbish managers and
workers to cooperate closely to effectively implement a project to build a
