Subject: [CubaNews] Castro's first visit to Iran (BBC)

BBC - Monday, 7 May, 2001, 12:51 GMT 13:51 UK
Castro's first visit to Iran
The Cuban president, Fidel Castro, is beginning an
official visit to Iran on Monday - his first to the country.

President Castro will be meeting the Iranian president,
Mohammad Khatami, and the country's supreme leader,
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The trip follows President
Khatami's official visit to Havana last year.

The talks are expected to focus on increasing
co-operation between the two countries - both hit
by embargos imposed by the United States.

Speaking ahead of the visit, Cuban ambassador to
Tehran Dario Urra Torriente described the United States
as their common enemy, saying it was trying to strangle
both Cuba and Iran economically.

He said that a common stand against US policy created
a strong link between the two countries.

Iran currently heads the G-77 group of developing
nations, which aims to promote economic and
technical co-operation among developing countries.
