As he was addressing a V-E Day gala conference in Minsk, the President referred to three horrible wars through which Belarus had come in the 20th century--he was meaning rehabilitation after World War II; the Chernobyl tragedy, with an appalling man-made disaster which endangered the health of 20% of its population; and, last but not least, the collapse of the Soviet Union. "Now we are being drawn into a fourth war, on Yugoslav patterns. Huge sums are spent on it with unprecedented pressure from without," said Mr. Lukashenko. "Traitors have been recruited in the country to implement the scheme. A fifth column is emerging to promote not national interests but those of other countries and overseas-based organisations which are by no means friendly to us."
