POLITICAL BUREAU RECEIVES BURMESE AMBASSADOR

�VIENTIANE, MAY 11 (KPL). Head of the Party Central Commitee office, Mr
Bouasone Bouphavanh on May 10 received a courtesy visit from Mr U Seien Win
Aung, Burmese Ambassador to Laos.

�Mr Bouasone Bouphavanh congratulated Mr U seien Win Aung who is doing his
duty and making a contribution to the enhancement of co-operation between
Laos and Myanmar.

�The ambassor thanked Mr Bouasone Bouphavanh for his warm welcome and
confirmed that he would do his utmost to strengthen the relationship between
Myanmar and Laos./.

SOVIET WARTIME PHOTO EXHIBITION

�Vientiane, may 11 (KPL) A photo exhibition to mark the 56th anniversary of
the victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic war 1941-1945 was
held here yesterday.

�The event, organised by the Russian Embassy in collaboration with the
Ministry of Information and Culture, was attended by Mr Osakanh Thammatheva,
Politburo member and head of the Party Central Committee propaganda and
Training Board who also cut the ribbon to open the ceremony.

� Mr Phandouagchit Vongsa, Minister of Information and Culture, Russian
Ambassador Valentine Eremchenko, Ministers, Deputy Ministers, and Diplomats,
together with other senior officials were also present at the event.

�Addressing guests at the opening ceremony, Mr Valentine Eremchenko said
that on June 22, 1941 fascist Germany treacherously, and without declaration
of war, attacked our country. The blow was delivered on a vast front from
the Barents Sea in the North of the USSR to the Black Sea on the South.

�He also said the Victory Day is not only a great event for the people of
the Russian Federation, but also for the Commonwealth of Independent States,
and for the people of many countries in Europe and Asia. On that day we bow
in memory of those who gave their lives for the happiness of future
generations, those who saved the world from the tyranny of evil fascism./.

PRESS CONFERENCE AT RUSSIAN EMBASSY

VIENTIANE, May 11 (KPL) -- A press conference was held on May 7 at the
Russian embassy in Vientiane on the occasion of the 56th anniversary of the
victory of the Soviet people in the World War Two.

Present at the conference were media representatives, diplomatic envoys, and
military attaches. 

Russian Ambassador Valentine Eremchenko and staff members of the embassy
were present. Rank Victor Fadeyev, military attache of the Russian embassy,
addressed the press conference. He said that the soviet people defeated
fascism to win victory in the great patriotic war and that the soviet army
and people turned out as one in the sacred war to defend the motherland and
display mass heroism./.

VIET NAM AND LAO INTERIOR MINISTRIES INK COOPERATION AGREEMENT
�� Ha Noi, May 11 (VNA) -- Public Security Minister Sen. Lieut. Gen. Le Minh
Huong and Lao Interior Minister Asang Laoly signed a cooperation agreement
for the 2001-2005 period in Vientiane, Laos, this morning, May 11.
�� The signing was part of a working visit made by a high-ranking delegation
of the Vietnamese Public Security Ministry from May 8-11.
�� The two ministries informed each other about their respective countries'
political security situation and social order and exchanged views on
international and regional issues of mutual concern.
�� They spoke highly of the results of cooperation in fighting criminals,
particularly drug criminals. They also discussed the implementation of the
five-year agreement for this year.
�� While in Laos, Minister Huong and his delegation paid courtesy visits to
Khamtay Siphandon, Chairman of the Lao People's Revolutionary Party (LPRP)
Central Committee and President of Laos; and Prime Minister Boungnang
Vorachit. 
�� During the receptions, the Lao Party, State and government leaders spoke
highly of the results of the talks between delegations of the Vietnamese
Public Security Ministry and the Lao Interior Ministry, describing it as an
important milestone in promoting the friendship and cooperation between the
two ministries. 
�� They expressed their belief in a further development of the two
ministries' cooperation and mutual assistance on the basis of the
traditional friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two Parties
and States. 
�� President Siphandon and Prime Minister Vorachit asked Minister Huong to
convey their best regards to General Secretary Nong Duc Manh, President Tran
Duc Luong, Prime Minister Phan Van Khai and other Vietnamese Party and State
leaders. 
�� The Vietnamese delegation also paid floral tributes to the War Martyrs
Monument in Vientiane.--VNA

GERMANY AID FOR MANUSCRIPT PRESERVATION

�VIENTIANE, MAY 11 (KPL). The German government has approved further aid for
the the 2001 period, amounting to dm 239,000 for the Lao palm leaf
manuscript preservation project under the Ministry of Information and
Culture. 

�The fund will be used for the organisation of training courses on
microfilming and film storage, training for villagers, and survey and data
collection in the provinces of Savannakhet, Xiengkhouang and Khammouane.

�The approval was signed on May 8 at the Ministry of Information and Culture
by German Ambassador Christian Berger, and Houmpheng Sinpaseuth, Ministry
Chief of Cabinet. The signing was witnessed by Information and Culture
Minister Phanduangchith Vongsa, and representatives from the Ministry of
Foreign Affairs and the Lao-German Co-operation Project.

�Under a 10-year programme, the project has operated for nine years.

�The preservation will be conducted in two provinces a year. Each year, the
project holds training courses for officials from target provinces to learn
survey methodologies to encourage and create awareness of Buddhist
organisations at various levels, local respected elder people, and local
information and culture officials.

�Palm leaf manuscripts were used by ancestors for the recording of knowledge
on religion, rites and rituals, traditional medicines, folk wisdom, and
histories, among others./.
