Just ask our new clients in Skopje and Belgrade.] May 16, 2001 U.S. General Visits Tajikistan DUSHANBE, Tajikistan (AP) -- The United States hopes to develop military cooperation with Tajikistan, which it considers a strategically important country, a visiting U.S. defense official said Wednesday. Army Gen. Tommy Franks, the head of U.S. Central Command, told journalists that he discussed ways to strengthen security on the Tajik-Afghan border during his four-hour visit to Dushanbe, the capital of the Central Asian nation. Violence breaks out frequently in Tajikistan, which suffered a five-year civil war between the Islamic opposition and the secular government that ended with a peace deal in 1997. The government is worried about drug trafficking, Afghanistan's ruling Taliban, and Islamic militants in remote Tajikistan who have clashed with the forces of Central Asian governments the past two summers.
