The current monarch, who last returned to Romania in
1999 to push for NATO membership, was placed on the
throne, as King Mihai I, by the pro-Nazi Antonescu
regime in 1940. He was formally the chief of staff of
the Romanian army that accompanied their Nazi allies
in the invasion of Russia in 1941.

Former Romanian King to Return to Savarsin Castle

May 24, 2001 -- (BBC Monitoring) Text of report in
English by Romanian news agency Rompres web site.

Bucharest, 23 May: After nearly 54 years, former
Romanian King Michael I returns on Friday [15 May] to
Savarsin (near the western city of Arad) for a six-day
stay at the castle which the Romanian government has
recently decided to return to the king's ownership.

The Romanian government decided to drop an appeal
against a court ruling under which Savarsin castle was
being returned to King Michael. After the former
monarch abdicated in December 1947, Savarsin was the
last stop of the royal train on the way to exile. The
locals are anxiously awaiting the former sovereign and
some of them - among whom the king's coachman Iosif
Anitescu, 91 - have met him personally.

On Sunday, the royal family will attend the
consecration of the Savarsin Orthodox church, recently
renovated. Early Monday they will visit the nearby
Bulci country town and the Mocioni castle which now
houses a hospital; later in the day they will visit
the Savarsin museum and meet the Savarsin locals. On
Tuesday, former King Michael will visit the "airfield"
of Varadia, where he used to land his private plane.
He will then meet members of the Savarsin Local
Council.

Michael I is also scheduled to give audiences for two
hours on Wednesday. The royal family will be leaving
Savarsin on Thursday.
