Irish Support for Death Fast in Turkey

A series of meetings were organised throughout Ireland last week in order
to highlight the ongoing Death Fast resistance by revolutionary prisoners
in the prisons of Turkey. The following is summary of what happened.

16th May Trinity College Dublin

Speakers:
John Nixon Former INLA Hunger Striker
Tony O'Hara Former Blanketman and brother of Hunger Strike martyr Patsy
O'Hara
Sheanna Breatchuach Former Republican prisoner and friend of Bobby Sands
Des Bonass - ATGWU
A representative of IKM (The Committee for Struggle Against Torture Through
Isolation) representing the prisoners on Death Fast.

John Nixon made the point that when Bobby Sands died one man shook the
world but 22 people have died in Turkey and yet it is still being kept
quiet. He suggested that people need to establish a network of
communications so as to break the silence and that our solidarity message
that we do care needs to get back to the prisoners in Turkey.

Seanna Breatchuach commented that you should judge a state by how they
treat their prisoners, the world is watching Turkey he said.

Tony O'Hara said: "50 years ago it was the concentration camps in Poland,
20 years ago it was the concentration camps of Long Kesh, today it is the
concentration camps of Turkey."

The representative of IKM gave the main presentation of the evening and
explained the history of the prison struggles in Turkey and brought it up
to date to the current resistance.

Don Bonass from the ATGWU chaired the evening's proceedings.

December massacre at Armagh GAA club. There was also a presentation by IKM
and the launch of a CD commemorating the Irish Hunger Strike.

The Irish Republican Socialist Party and the Voice of the Lark Discussion
Forum jointly organised a meeting in support of the Death Fast in Turkey on
the Falls Road. There was a video showing of the 19th December massacre
and speeches by Tony Little, an ex-blanketman, Tony O'Hara, brother of
Patsy O'Hara, and from the IKM representative.

--------

20th May Derry City

The annual Patsy O'Hara commemoration march to the Republican Socialist
plot in Derry City was joined by a contingent representing the Death Fast
in Turkey. John Nixon and IKM, as well as those who represent the
Republican Socialist movement today gave speeches.

Following these activities in Ireland support committees have been
organised in Dublin, Derry and Belfast. They will continue to highlight
the ongoing resistance in the prisons of Turkey as well as planning
solidarity actions in Ireland. They intend to send a delegation to Turkey
as soon as possible so as to see for their own eyes the resistance by the
prisoners and their families. This is the true legacy of the 1981 Hunger
Strike.
