NA deputies focus on implementation�
of socio-economic tasks
National Assembly deputies met at the conference hall on the sixth working
day, May 28, to discuss the implementation of socio-economic tasks and the
State budget for 2000 and the first months of 2001 as well as measures to
boost socio-economic development in the remaining months of 2001.

After affirming achievements and analysing weaknesses in implementing
socio-economic tasks and the State budget last year and the first months of
this year, the NA deputies suggested ways to overcome difficulties and boost
agricultural production and farm produce consumption.

The NA deputies dealt with issues relating to the construction of
socio-economic infrastructure, changes of land, labour and inhabitants in
rural areas, the exemption and reduction of land use tax for farmers, the
implementation of poverty reduction programme, job creation, the
implementation of social policies, and the national socio-economic
development programme (called Programme 135 in short) in the poorest
communes.

Policies on education, especially those for pre-school teachers and students
enrollment, and the fight against social evils, particularly corruption,
drug addiction, and prostitution, were also discussed. (VNA)

Party secretary meets Myanmar delegation

Vu Khoan, Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee,
received in Hanoi on May 28, the visiting delegation of the Myanmar
Solidarity and Development Council.

The Myanmar delegation led by permanent member of the Council U Thien Sein
has been here from May 25 for a working visit.

Mr Khoan warmly welcomed the delegation's visit, saying it will contribute
to strengthening the traditional friendship between the two peoples. He
noted that the Vietnamese people always bear in mind and are grateful to the
whole-hearted support of the Myanmar people to their past struggle for
national independence and freedom.

He went on to say that relations between the two countries have been growing
increasingly stronger since the 1990s in the form of bilateral co-operation
and within the framework of ASEAN co-operation. Mr Khoan expressed his hope
that the two countries should boost exchange and co-operation in various
fields, especially in agriculture, tourism, mining, and the manufacture of
precious stones.

U Thein Sein said that he was impressed by what he had seen in his visit to
Vietnam and briefed Secretary Khoan of his country's socio-economic
development in recent years. He said Myanmar gives priority to developing
relations with other countries in the region, including Vietnam.

Acting President of the Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations Vu Xuan

Deputy PM welcomes new Russian ambassador

Deputy PM Nguyen Manh Cam congratulated the new Russian Ambassador to
Vietnam, A. Tatarinov, in Hanoi on May 28.

He expressed his confidence in a further consolidation and development of
the traditional multi-faceted co-operation between Vietnam and Russia in the
spirit of strategic partnership which was established during the visit to
Vietnam in March by Russian President Vladimir Putin. (VNA)

Youth to visit Japan on friendship tour
Forty-five representatives of Vietnamese youth will be in Japan from May 29
to June 26 for the first phase of this year's Japan-ASEAN Youth Friendship
programme. 

During their stay in Japan, the Vietnamese will participate in Japan's
professional areas such as secondary education, social service, economic and
cultural activities. They will also join Japanese youths in social
activities and call at several famous sites in the country.

The programme has been carried out since 1995 under an agreement reached
between the two countries' leaders during a visit to Vietnam by the then
Prime Minister, Tomiichi Murayama in August 1994.

Under the programme - part of the Vietnam-Japan technological co-operation
framework, Vietnam has so far sent around 600 people to Japan. (VNA)

Hanoi gives gifts to poor children

The Hanoi Child Care and Protection Committee and the Hanoi Fund for
Children held a meeting and presented gifts to 200 poor children, who study
at school with excellence, in twelve districts to mark International
Children�s Day, June 1.

Each child received a gift, including sweets, cakes, sugar, milk and VND
200,000. After the meeting, children enjoy the American cartoon, �Chicken
Run.'
