        Paramilitaries massacre five people
        -----------------------------------

BOGOTA -- Colombian authorities Tuesday found the bodies of five people
killed by suspected paramilitary gunmen in a remote part of the
northwestern province of Antioquia, police spokesmen said.

The discovery was made between the towns of El Pe ol and Guatape, 330
kilometers (205 miles) northwest of Bogota. The bodies of the three men
and two women were riddled with bullets, police said.

In a separate incident, Julian de Jesus Ospina Naranjo, the mayor of
Sonson, a town in Antioquia province, was kidnapped along with his driver
in a roadblock set up by National Liberation Army (ELN) guerrillas, along
with his driver.

The mayor of Argelia, Jorge Ivan Cardenas Zapata, was released at the same
roadblock, according to authorities.

On Monday, authorities found the bodies of nine peasants, presumably
killed by Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) guerrillas, in
Cordoba province, which neighbors Antioquia province.

        Eight policemen injured in bombing
        ----------------------------------

BOGOTA -- Eight policemen were injured on Tuesday when unknown assailants,
presumably guerrillas, threw four bombs at a police academy near Bogota,
officials said.

A police spokesman said that the four canisters filled with explosives and
shrapnel were thrown at the Gonzalo Jimenez de Quesada School located in
Sibate, a town near Bogota.

The eight officers were all injured by shrapnel, but none of the injuries
were serious, the spokesman said.

Three of the four bombs exploded in the interior of the building, damaging
doors and shattering windows.

The alleged guerrillas used a dumptruck as a "launching pad" for the
bombs, but the attackers later abandoned the vehicle.

The police spokesman attributed the attack to the Revolutionary Armed
Forces of Colombia (FARC), the largest and oldest guerrilla group in the
country. The FARC has been involved in peace talks with the government
since 1998.

Last Friday, four people died and another 30 were injured when two bombs
exploded below a pedestrian bridge on an avenue in downtown Bogota.

In addition, on May 21, the police located a bomb hidden in a van that had
been abandoned in front of the offices of the weekly Voz, the newspaper of
the Colombian Communist Party.
