Probably the new right government led by Berlusconi replacing the old one of Amato (centre-left) will be established only at the end of June. This temporary and uncertain situation has not yet allowed the Genoa Social Forum, GSF (the unity body organizing protest actions against the big 8) to have a sure interlocutor with whom it can discuss about spaces for the counter-summit, due permissions and assurances for demonstrations taking place against the G8-summit. In the meantime the intelligence agencies have spread, during the last few days, releases broadly reported by the mass media intending to create a disquieting climate of hysteria with the sole aim of isolating protesters by depicting them as violent, dangerous and riotous. At the moment all we could learn about is a raving militarisation plan of the city, bound to make life impossible for people living in Genoa during the G8-summit, who, in fact, are kindly requested to leave their city in those days. According to this plan the Genoa harbour (one of the biggest in Italy, and in high vacation time) is going to be closed, as well as the two main railways stations and the highway passing over Genoa and connecting the northern part of the city with the southern one a fundamental traffic artery as Genoa stretches along the coast for more than ten kilometers. For this reason on June 2nd, day of the Italian Republic and anniversary of the promulgation of the Italian antifascist constitution, the GSF has called upon a national and international mobilisation to urge on the Italian authorities to make them decide for good to observe the Constitution and to safeguard the freedom of demonstrating. Our main political task is to keep the movement united, to reject criminalisation and to enlarge the group of action promoters with as many as possible political forces and unions as for example the metal workers now struggling for the their contract renewal. We are struggling for a mobilisation able to make a jump in quality, if compared to the ones in Seattle, Prague and Nice. The problem of the anti-globalisation movement is not to be there, but to grow, as we are convinced that this could represent the needs of most working people and in the largest part of humanity. Struggling forms are consequent to this project: a peaceful and mass mobilization, even though radical in its contents, is an essential term to ensure a growth and to allow the traditional working class to unite with new movements. Within this multi-coloured world, as you know, there are those who think in a different way and have a self-centred attitude mostly tending to emphasize actions of confrontation with the police. This attitude can bring to ruptures in the unity bodies and to a weakening of the mass character of mobilisations. We think that the only way of avoiding this is to promote the participation of young people, working people and international left forces at the four action days in Genoa. A mass participation is the only real prevention of any action degeneration. For this reason we stress our appeal for the participation of all forces at the mobilisation against the G8-summit in Genoa.
