Subject: [CubaNews] Protests against the OAS

GRANMA June 7, 2001
Protests against the OAS
SAN JOS.- Several hundred union leaders and university
students protested against the Organization of American States
(OAS) in San Jos, as the 34 delegates from the continent
prepared for the inauguration of the 31st General Assembly of
the organization.

Yelling "OAS out," the protesters concentrated about one block
away from the National Theater in downtown San Jos, where
foreign ministers and other delegates began to arrive for the
inauguration of the meeting.

According to the Civil Committee for the Struggle Against the
OAS, which called for the demonstration, protests were aimed
at bringing out the "inhumane violation of human rights" of
the neoliberal policies applied by Latin American governments.

In a letter directed at OAS Secretary-General Csar Gaviria,
the Committee stated that the OAS had no moral authority to
speak about human rights, one of the General Assembly's
central themes, "when the neoliberal policies imposed [by the
governments] are the most extreme violations of human rights."

"Let the people decide on the Free Trade Area of the
Americas," read one of the placards held by protesters. (AFP)
