Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh affirmed the Vietnamese Party, State
and people's determination to constantly strengthen and promote the
traditional friendship and co-operation between Vietnam and Russia during
his reception of Russian ambassador Andrei Alexeevich Tatarinov in Hanoi on
June 7.
Mr Manh congratulated Russia for its recent important achievements and
wished the Russian people success in their efforts to develop Russia into a
strong country with an important role to play in the world. He thanked the
Russian people for their valuable support and assistance to Vietnam.
Mr Manh asked Ambassador Tatarinov to convey his best regards to President
Vladimir Putin and other Russian leaders.
The Russian ambassador warmly congratulated the success of the Ninth
National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) and expressed his
pleasure at the fine development of the two countries' traditional
friendship and co-operation. He wished the Vietnamese people under the
leadership of the CPV and General Secretary Manh fulfil the tasks set forth
at the ninth Party National Congress.
The same day, General Secretary Manh received Indian Ambassador Saurabh
Kumar.
Ambassador Kumar conveyed President K R Narayanan's and Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee's invitation to Mr Manh for a visit to India. He
congratulated Mr Manh on the success of the recent Ninth Party National
Congress and said he hoped that the Vietnamese people would record greater
achievements in their renovation process.
General Secretary Manh thanked the Indian president and prime minister for
their invitation. He expressed his pleasure at the fine development of
Vietnam-India relations and his confidence that their ties would continue to
develop for the benefit of regional and world-wide peace and prosperity.

President visits Vietnam-Russia tropical centre
President Tran Duc Luong visits the centre's showroom.
President Tran Duc Luong visited the Vietnam-Russia Tropical Centre, a
co-operation agency of multi-faceted scientific and technological research
between the two countries, in Hanoi on June 7.
President Luong praised Vietnamese workers and Russian experts' efforts in
the past 13 years of operation, especially their achievements in resolving
problems with the environment and people's health in the aftermath of
chemical warfare.
He wished the centre further development, thus contributing more to national
industrialisation and modernisation as well as to strengthening the
traditional friendship and co-operation between Vietnam and Russia. (VNA)

PM attends 'Future of Asia' conference
PM Phan Van Khai receives Japanese Finance Minister Masjuri Shiokawa.
Prime Minister Phan Van Khai led a Vietnamese delegation to attend the
seventh 'Future of Asia' conference held in Tokyo, Japan.
The two-day conference was opened yesterday by 'Nihon Keizai' newspaper.
Prime Minister is to deliver a speech named 'Japan's Comprehensive Vision of
Asian Diplomacy' today.
After the opening speech of the president and executive manager of the
'Nihon Keizai' newspaper, representatives of attending countries delivered
their speeches.
Attending the conference were leaders and officials of government, financial
and banking institutions, businessmen and scholars of many regional
countries.
The conference also attracted the participation of the prime minister of
Malaysia, Mahathir bin Mohamad; the prime minister of Cambodia, Hun Sen; the
former deputy prime minister of Thailand, Supachai Panitshapakdi, the former
secretary of foreign affairs of the Philippines, Domingo L Siazon and many
representatives from China, the Republic of Korea, Indonesia, India and the
United States.

NA passes three chapters of fire protection law
National Assembly deputies met at the conference hall on June 7, the 14th
day of the ninth session of the tenth National Assembly, to discuss and pass
Chapters I, II and III of the Fire Protection Law.
Forty-nine deputies from 34 provinces and cities gave comments on measures
to prevent and fight fires.
The National Assembly will meet again at the conference hall on June 8.

Vietnam, Russia to boost strategic partnership
The foreign ministers of Vietnam and Russia have affirmed the determination
of the two countries' top leaders to further strengthen their strategic
partnership which was identified after the recent visit to Vietnam by
Russian President V Putin.
They expressed these sentiments at a meeting during a visit to Russia by
Vietnamese Foreign Minister Nguyen Dy Nien on June 5-6.
Mr Nien's foreign counterpart, Russian Foreign Minister Ivanov, said that
strengthening friendship and co-operation with Vietnam is an important
priority in Russia's foreign policy, and that a fine development of
Russia-Vietnam relations not only serves the interests of the two peoples,
but also contributes to peace and stability in the region and the world.
The two FMs discussed and agreed on measures to implement agreements on
boosting high-ranking meetings between the two countries' States,
governments and national assembly leaders. These measures will help expand
co-operation in trade, science-technology, culture, education and training,
thus taking Vietnam-Russia relations to a new height in the 21st century.
They exchanged views on measures to enhance co-ordination between the two
foreign ministries and agreed on boosting regular meetings and exchange of
visits between the two foreign ministries which, they said, was of great
significance to increasing mutual understanding on common international
issues.
Minister Nien met with Speaker of the Federation Council Yegor Stroyev and
Speaker of the Duma Guennady Seleznyov, who welcomed the success of the
Ninth Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam. They spoke highly of
Vietnam's achievements in its renovation process and expressed pleasure at
the fine co-operative relations between the two legislatures and their wish
for further development of the bilateral relations in the coming time.
Minister Nien also met with deputy prime minister, chairman of the Russian
section of the Russia-Vietnam Inter-governmental Committee for Economy,
Trade and Science-Technology Co-operation, V Khristenko.
They discussed the implementation of the agreements signed by the two
countries' top leaders and preparations for a working session of the
chairman of the Vietnamese and Russian sections in the third quarter of this
year and the eighth session of the Vietnam-Russia Inter-governmental
Committee later this year.
During his stay in Moscow, Foreign Minister Nien laid wreaths at President
Ho Chi Minh's memorial statue and the Unknown Soldier's Monument and visited
the Vietnamese Embassy and cultural places in Moscow. (VNA)

Vietnam attends APEC trade ministers' meeting
Vietnamese Trade Minister Vu Khoan attended the seventh meeting of trade
ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member countries
that opened in Shanghai, China, on June 6.
The two-day meeting discussed an open trade policy and the building of a
multilateral trade system in order to accelerate trade liberalisation,
create favourable conditions for trade and investment, and promote economic
and technological co-operation and a new electronic commerce economy.
The meeting was also intended to promote another round of negotiations on
the World Trade Organisation.
Chinese President Jiang Zemin said that the meeting played an important role
in maintaining stability and creating an open environment for trade in the
region as well as establishing a new and equitable economic order in the
world.
Ties with APEC countries discussed
Vietnam's Trade Minister Vu Khoan has discussed with delegates from China,
Russia, the United States, Thailand, the Republic of Korea, and Canada
measures to boost bilateral economic and commercial co-operation.
These bilateral working sessions were held in the sidelines of the seventh
meeting of trade ministers from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC)
countries held in Shanghai, China, on June 6 and 7.
The meeting made preparations for the high-level APEC meeting in Shanghai in
October and emphasised the importance of strengthening bilateral and
multilateral cooperation in economics, trade, and investment between APEC
member countries.
The meeting supported another round of negotiations within the World Trade
Organisation (WTO) and the joining of Viet Nam, China, Taiwan and Russia
into the organisation. (VNA)

Efforts to overcome whirlwind aftermath
A whirlwind hit Tan Minh village in Ham Tan district, southern Binh Thuan
province.
The whirlwind seriously damaged the village�s school. It also pulled down or
made roofless nearly 100 houses. Twenty hectares of fruit trees were
destroyed.
Local authorities have taken immediate measures to overcome the aftermath:
mobilising forces to repair schools and houses, providing rice to households
in difficulties. The life of the villagers is now returning normal.
