Associated Press. 8 June 2001. Miners Wreak Havoc in Bolivia.

LA PAZ -- About 5,000 Bolivian miners clashed with police and used
dynamite to destroy parts of a La Paz court house Friday in violence
that left at least a dozen protesters injured.

The miners came from across Bolivia to demand that the government
provide financing and equipment to help revive the mining industry. The
government has yet to respond.

The miners tried to take the city's main plaza, surrounding the
government palace and shouting out criticisms of President Hugo Banzer.

Police fired tear gas to drive the miners out of the plaza. The men then
moved on to the Superior Court of La Paz, where they exploded sticks of
dynamite to damage parts of the building.

The miners belong to self-managed cooperatives that have been reeling
from the economic slump plaguing Bolivia. They insist they will not
leave La Paz until their demands are met.
