Workers' Party spokesman, Shay Kelly, said that the Irish government and the main opposition parties were going down a very dangerous road in ignoring the democratic mandate handed down by the people last Thursday. "Now we know why the Fianna Fil party didn't bother canvassing in this referendum, they had no intention of respecting the outcome if it went against them", he said. "It is very simple", said Mr. Kelly, "the Irish people voted NO to the Treaty of Nice and the government must uphold that mandate. To do otherwise is to subvert the democratic process. This is what happens in a dictatorship. The Irish people will judge in the coming days and weeks what type of a system they are living under, one which respects the democratically expressed will of the Irish people or one which ignores it and seeks to subvert it". "I am warning the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) and the opposition Fine Gael and Labour Parties, which are supporting him in trying to railroad the Irish people into changing their minds on the Nice Treaty, that they have already raised the anger of the Irish people. It may not be long before we have to organise pro-democracy demonstrations in the streets of Ireland's cities and towns. Nice has been rejected and must be dropped. A declaration or repackaging of the treaty is totally unacceptable. Renegotiation is essential if democracy is to prevail", said Mr. Kelly.
