Who can guarantee that such fate does not await our tiny republic?" Abkhazian Armed Forces to Hold Wide-Scale Exercise on June 11-20 SUKHUMI, Jun 12, 2001 -- (Military News Agency) The Abkhazian Armed Forces will hold a large-scale tactical exercise with live firing on June 12 to 20 in accordance with the republic leadership's order, Abkhazian Defense Minister Vladimir Mikamba told the Military News Agency on Friday. The exercise will take place in the areas close to the Georgian border and at the Black Sea coast. It will involve regular army units and reservists drafted for a month. During the training the units will conduct live firing from air defense systems, artillery systems and tanks as well as from coast guard boats. Major General Nikolai Sidorychev, commander of the collective peacekeeping forces in the Georgian-Abkhazian conflict zone, has been informed about the exercise. Mikamba made it clear that the Abkhazian training is a kind of response to the NATO naval exercise which is to be held in the Georgian territory and in the sea near the town of Poti from June 11 to 23. "We remember it well how NATO started the massive bombing of Yugoslavia in March 1999 under the pretext of "preventing a humanitarian catastrophe" in Kosovo. Who can guarantee that such fate does not await our tiny republic? That is why we have planned our own exercice are are planning to continue reinforcing our army, which is a guarantor of our security," Mikamba said.
