CANADIAN PEACEMAKER BEATEN BY ISRAELI POLICE
On June 15, Anita Fast, 30, from Vancouver BC, a member of Christian
Peacemaker Teams (CPT), was beaten and briefly detained by Israeli police
when she attempted to protect a Palestinian woman who was being beaten at a
peace camp near Bethlehem.
Fast and two other members of CPT, including Fr Bob Holmes, 64, from Toronto
ON, had joined 150 Israelis and Palestinians at a peace camp set up to stop
the expansion of the illegal Israeli settlement of Efrat at the southeastern
edge of Bethlehem.
Israeli police ordered the crowd to disperse and then immediately began
clubbing and arresting people. Fast tried to intervene to stop police from
beating a Palestinian woman. Fast was then clubbed and yanked by the hair
into a police van.
An Israeli peace worker, Neta Golan, was also beaten, pulled by the hair,
and had her arm twisted so hard it broke at the elbow. Police refused to
provide medial attention for Golan while she was in custody.
In all, five Israelis and Fast were arrested and detained for four hours at
Efrat police station before being released without conditions.
Fr Holmes said, "The unprovoked brutality of the police was shocking, even
in this brutal time and place."
Christian Peacemaker Teams has maintained a violence-reduction presence in
Hebron, West Bank since 1995 at the invitation of the Hebron municipality.
