Subject: [downwithcapitalism] Pinochet hearings proceed

Associated Press. 19 June 2001. Lawyers: Pinochet Can Be Tried.

SANTIAGO -- Prosecution lawyers on Tuesday insisted that Gen. Augusto
Pinochet's deteriorated health should not spare him from being tried on
human right charges.

Prosecutor Eduardo Contreras said Pinochet has health problems, but is
"not crazy or demented" the only conditions that would exempt him from
prosecution.

"Health is not reason to suspend this legal process against Pinochet,"
Contreras said in the second day of hearings to decide whether to
suspend legal action against the former dictator.

Four prosecution lawyers made their case on Tuesday before the Santiago
Court of Appeals, one day after Pinochet's chief lawyer, Pablo
Rodriguez, asked the court to suspend legal action against Pinochet
claiming that he is too ill to stand trial.

Rodriguez insisted that "Gen. Pinochet has 11 serious health problems,
at age 86." Pinochet actually is 85.

The new round of hearings in Pinochet's prolonged court battle are
expected to close on Wednesday. The three-judge panel can take several
days before issuing a ruling.

Pinochet is charged with covering up 18 kidnappings and 57 homicides in
connection with the so-called "Caravan of Death," a military party that
executed 75 political prisoners shortly after the 1973 coup in which
Pinochet ousted Marxist President Salvador Allende.

At least 3,200 people were killed or disappeared for political reasons
during Pinochet's 1973-90 dictatorship, according to government figures.
