In a statement issued by the Council, they called upon the international Community to take a more effective role in pressuring Israel to recognize the Palestinian peoples national rights. They added that they have called upon their Government to act among the International Community to pressure Israel for lifting the siege, stopping the aggression against the Palestinian people, stopping the collective punishments policy, and retreating to the 1967 June 4th borders complying with the UN resolutions 242, 338, 194. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECOGNISING THAT THE MIDDLE EAST IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AND ISRAELI FORCES HAVE TURNED PALESTINE INTO A CONCENTRATION CAMP. This UTLC meeting resolves: To support the Palestinian right to peace, self-determination and independence. To condemn Israel's continuing aggression, the attacks on civilians and demonstrators, the collective punishments of Palestinian communities, the economic and military siege of the Palestinian people in the occupied territories and the threatened escalation for total war. That the violence in Palestine is a direct result of Israeli occupation. That there are gross violations of the Fourth Geneva Conventions by Israel through the maintenance of its brutal military occupation of Palestinian land. To condemn the Howard Government for continuing to take a pro-Israeli stance. We call on the Foreign Minister to be even handed and to support our calls, and strive for a just political settlement and not the military solution of PM Sharon. The Australian Government should strive internationally to ensure that Israel will: * immediately lift the economic and military siege, allow freedom of movement of the Palestinian population within and between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip and outside of the occupied territories; * withdraw from the 1967-occupied Palestinian and Arab territories in accordance with UN resolution 242 and 338; * recognise the Palestinian people's right to self-determination and independence; * allow Palestinian refugees to return to their homeland and compensate them in accordance with UN resolution 194; To call on the United States and all Governments to immediately cease military aid to Israel; To call on the Australian Government to increase assistance to the Palestinian people. This meeting resolves to form a Palestinian Human Rights Committee with the UTLC International Committee to pursue the above. That the UTLC call on the ACTU International Committee to support this position.
