BELGRADE -- Around 10,000 supporters of jailed ex-president Slobodan
Milosevic took to the streets of Belgrade Tuesday to protest his likely
handover to the UN war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

The demonstration, organised by his Socialist party (SPS), went ahead
without incident, shadowed by a small force of police.

"We will hand over nobody and we demand freedom for Slobodan," read a
banner.

Four SPS vice-presidents -- Zivorad Jovanovic, Zoran Andjlekovic, Ivica
Dacic and Zivorad Igic -- participated in the protest.

Demonstrators bore placards saying: "We give our lives, we will not give
Slobo", "Freedom for Slobodan" and "The only president they're selling
to the devils in The Hague."

The SPS official warned that "those who have signed the decree" would
find themselves "before a Belgrade court" and that the "imposition of
the government decree would be the beginning of the end" for the
reformist coalition backing Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica.

The demonstrators later began a protest march through the streets of
central Belgrade.
