Chretien announces next year's G-8 summit to be in Kananaskis, Alta.
GENOA, Italy (CP) - Next year's G-8 Summit will take place in the Kananaskis
provincial park area in western Alberta. Prime Minister Jean Chretien made
the announcement following this weekend's summit of the world's major
industrialized countries in Genoa, Italy. Chretien said the 2002 summit will
take place on the last weekend of June in the Kananaskis region, about 60
kilometres west of Calgary.
The P-M also indicated next year's summit would be smaller, adding that some
current summit delegations are as large as 900.
Italian officials had said no more than 400 total delegates would be allowed
next year.
The remote setting will allow the smaller and more informal summit Chretien
wants.
But officials also hope it will help them avoid repeats of the violent
protests that marred the Genoa summit and a number of other recent
international conferences.
One protester was killed, scores were hurt, and hundreds arrested during two
days of rioting in Genoa.
