Australian Murdered in East Timor
DILI, East Timor (AP) -- U.N. police in East Timor
said Tuesday that they had arrested two suspects in
the murder of the brother of the president of
Australia's governing Liberal Party.
Terry Stone, 44, was allegedly stabbed in the back by
the estranged husband and brother of his East Timorese
girlfriend Monday evening, said U.N. police spokesman
Luis Carrilho.
''This was a crime of passion,'' Carrilho said
Stone was a businessman and the brother of Shane
Stone, the Liberal Party president and a former chief
minister of Australia's Northern Territory.
There are several thousand foreigners living in Dili
in the run up to East Timor's first democratic
election on Aug. 30. Most work for the transitional
U.N. administration, non-governmental organizations or
have set up businesses.
The economic disparity between the foreigner and
much-poorer local residents has led to an increase in
crime. In April, an Australian teacher was stabbed as
she left a restaurant in Dili.
A week later, the Australian wife of independence
leader Xanana Gusmao was stabbed and punched by a gang
of thieves who attempted to rob her as she left a
beach.
However, U.N. police maintain crime levels are low
compared to other countries.
