PROPOSED date, time and possible location(s) for Protest against NATO
meetings in Ottawa
At the meeting last night (of the Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade -
COAT) we discussed the timing of a non-violent protest to coincide with the
NATO Parliamentary Assembly (PA) meetings in Ottawa. As you may know, NATO
PA is meeting between Fri. Oct 5 and Mon. Oct 8 at the Ottawa Conference
Centre (that's the old train stn. across from the Chateau Laurier).
I think we'll all agree that we should establish a date, time and starting
point for the demonstration asap.
Then, we can all start publicising it far and wide.
Here then is a proposal for our anti-NATO protest:
Date & Time: Saturday, Oct 6, at 1 pm.
Location: Gathering in front of the U.S. Embassy (Sussex Dr.)
Note -----> This is a proposal only. Don't start publicizing this
date/location.
SYMBOLIC LOCATIONS
There are a number of potent symbolic locations very close to the
Conference Centre. These include:
(1) US embassy (Sussex Dr.)
(2) War Department (between Laurier Ave. and MacKenzie St.)
(3) UK embassy (Elgin St.)
(4) War Memorial (Elgin St. and Wellington St.)
(5) Parliament buildings (Wellington St.)
The proposal is that we gather at the (new) U.S. embassy on Sussex Dr.
(Since the U.S. is the hardcore of NATO, their embassy is a good place to
begin.) We could then walk towards the Conference Centre and get as close
as we can. This route also provides great opportunities for leafletting
the many Saturday shoppers who will, no doubt, be milling around the Byward
Market (oblivious to NATO).
We should anticipate that Wellington St. (between the Conference Centre and
the Chateau) will be completely blocked off by various police and
"security" departments. We can then either plan to:
(1) stay on the east side of the canal and set up our sound system on
Sussex Dr. or Rideau St., as close as possible to the Conference Centre,
(2) proceed to the War Department (and have our sound system on either the
MacKenzie St. or the Laurier Ave. bridges -- where our protests were held
during the NATO war), or
(3) cross the canal on these bridges and proceed to locations #3 to #5
listed above and have the sound system at one of those locations.
There are, of course, advantages and disadvantages to each of these
options. Some may suggest that we start on Parliament Hill and proceed to
the U.S. embassy via the various locations en route.
At this point it's most important that we determine a feasible date, time
and *starting* place. (We can work out the exact route of a peace march
later.)

P.S. End the Arms Race, a Vancouver peace group, is planning a conference
in Ottawa on Friday at the Westin Hotel. It will wrap up by noon on
Saturday, Oct. 6. Holding our protest at 1 pm. on Saturday will ensure
that we don't conflict with their event and it will enable those attending
their conference to join our protest.
